Word Work:
This week in word work we are reading, building and blending words with the sound of "ee" and "ea" as in "keep", or "beak".  The long e has other spellings, too.
We will also be studying the prefixes: re, un, and pre and how it affects the meanings when they are at the beginning of words.    We will practice using these words in sentences.

Spelling words:  me, we, keep, feed, beak, seat, play, rain, because, other
Word Wall Words:  because, blue, into, or , other, small

Math:

We are working in Unit 5 on place value through the tens place.  We will be exploring with some measurement activities, make  exchanges between tens and ones, and work on more comparisons with stories using the "greater than" or "less than" or "equal" symbols. There are some apps that you can use to help your child with these concepts.  You can access them here.

Science/Social Studies:
This week we are incorporating our past, present, future studies with our reading.  We will be comparing life then and life now.  We will be using venn diagrams to compare and contrast life long ago and now.  We will also be writing a constructed response to the essential question.  We are using the RACE acronym for a constructed response.  The R stands for restate the question.  The A stands for answer the question. The C stands for cite your work.  The E stands for text evidence.  In first grade we are working on the R and the A.  We are working on getting students to restate the question and then answer it.  Here is an example of what that looks like:

Writing:
In writing this week we are talking about opinion writing using letters.  We have been talking about the parts of a letter and different ways that we can say opinions.  We also have been working on reasons that support our opinions to try and persuade someone to agree with our opinion.  We have brainstormed different social problems that we have seen here at school.  For example being loud in the hallway for one.  We then started coming up with reasons to support why we think it's loud in the hallway.  The last thing that we will work on is finding solutions to help solve the social problem that we identified.  We will be writing these letters to the appropriate audiences.  Don't worry, ours are all school related so you won't have to worry about getting a letter for something your little person thinks is a social problem in your own house!
